The Beautiful Bridegroom
The Beautiful Bridegroom, a one-act comic opera for six women, has been hailed as a “masterpiece” by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Del Tredici. Based on an 18th-century play by Ludvig Holberg, this Mozart-style pastiche tells the story of a widow who has been searching for a young husband – not for her two marriageable daughters, but for herself. Some may remember the UA Opera Theatre’s first production of this piece in 2012, back when we were producing operas in the choral/opera room. Those were the days!! We’re happy to bring The Beautiful Bridegroom to Bryant-Jordan Hall.

Hansel and Gretel
This much-admired work is full of folk tunes and well-known themes, including the beloved “Evening Prayer” in Act II. Based on the Grimm brothers’ fairy tale of the same name, the opera is a fun journey with Hansel and Gretel who get lost in the forest and encounter a witch who lives in a house made of gingerbread, cake, and candy. We won’t spoil the ending, if you don’t already know it (and you probably do), but we hope you’ll join us to experience this marvelous tale once again.

Cinderella
This charming operetta from 1904 is enjoying new-found popularity. It tells the familiar story of the young Cinderella, Prince Charming, two meddling stepsisters, a bumbling stepfather, and a loving Fairy Godmother. The work as been described as “a retelling of the Cinderella story with Gallic wit,
Italianate bel canto, and a quirkiness all Viardot’s own.” This is a perfect piece for the entire family.
